The workshop could\u2019ve easily been misled into focusing on the charger or communication protocols like CP or PP. But EV charging issues can be deceptive \u2014 and this case proved it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1933\">Initially, the <strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"775\">gear lever position<\/strong> was suspected \u2014 a <strong data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"819\">common charging issue<\/strong> documented in <strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"850\">TSB No. 8622<\/strong>. In that case, charging is only possible when the <strong data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"926\">ignition is turned on<\/strong>, due to a faulty gear selector switch. However, in this case, <strong data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1046\">the vehicle wouldn\u2019t charge even with the ignition on<\/strong>, clearly indicating that <strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1100\">this was not the problem<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1940\" data-end=\"1983\">\u26a0\ufe0f A Sudden Drop That Changed Everything<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1985\" data-end=\"2189\">While test-driving and performing additional diagnostics, the workshop observed a critical symptom: <strong data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2159\">the battery state of charge (SOC) dropped from 95% to 5% in an instant<\/strong>. It pointed away from the On-Board Charger (OBC) and toward <strong data-start=\"2321\" data-end=\"2367\">the high-voltage battery management system<\/strong>, specifically the <strong data-start=\"2386\" data-end=\"2407\">control unit J840<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2569\">\ud83d\udd0d Key Diagnostic Insight: Cell Voltage vs. SOC Comparison<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2571\" data-end=\"2741\">One <strong data-start=\"2575\" data-end=\"2605\">measurement<\/strong> that helped confirm the fault was comparing the <strong data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2697\">cell voltage of the lithium-ion battery<\/strong> to the <strong data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2740\">indicated SOC (state of charge)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2743\" data-end=\"3015\">In this case, <strong data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2802\">all cells were showing a voltage of 4.21V<\/strong>, which is close to the <strong data-start=\"2826\" data-end=\"2850\">maximum charge level<\/strong> for lithium cells. With this voltage level, the SOC should have shown <strong data-start=\"2921\" data-end=\"2941\">at least 95\u2013100%<\/strong>. That false low SOC reading is what prevented charging from initiating.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\"><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\"><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\"><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\"><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\"><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3287\">\ud83d\udcf8 Freeze Frame Confirmation \u2013 Low Supply to J840<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3289\" data-end=\"3479\">Another key piece of evidence came from <strong data-start=\"3329\" data-end=\"3380\">freeze frame data captured when the DTC was set<\/strong>. That confirmed the issue was isolated inside the J840 module.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3950\" data-end=\"4159\">The J840 unit was replaced and coded successfully via <strong data-start=\"4004\" data-end=\"4047\">Elektro Partner\u2019s remote coding service<\/strong>, available in Scandinavia. After programming, the vehicle immediately accepted charging again \u2014 fault resolved.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"4166\" data-end=\"4214\">\ud83e\udde0 Lessons Learned: Symptom First, Then Codes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4216\" data-end=\"4487\">This case is a textbook example of why <strong data-start=\"176\" data-end=\"245\">diagnosing modern EVs requires more than just reading fault codes<\/strong>. The real lead didn\u2019t come from the codes themselves \u2014 it came from the <strong data-start=\"318\" data-end=\"371\">freeze frame data combined with observed symptoms<\/strong>, particularly the <strong data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"433\">sudden drop in high-voltage battery SOC<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"442\" data-end=\"515\">mismatch between actual cell voltage and the reported state of charge<\/strong>. These crucial clues pointed the workshop in the right direction and ultimately led to the identification of the fault inside the <strong data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"667\">J840 control unit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4489\" data-end=\"4733\">We\u2019re seeing <strong data-start=\"162\" data-end=\"220\">an increasing number of cases like this on our Hotline<\/strong>, where the issue runs deeper than just the CP\/PP charging signals. <strong data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"336\">Vehicle-specific fault codes are often vague<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"342\" data-end=\"397\">tester live data doesn\u2019t always tell the full story<\/strong>.
